HOI AN OLD TOWN OVERVIEW
Once a major Southeast Asian trading post in the 16th and 17th centuries, the seaside town Hoi An is a harmonious combination East and West in the form of its old-town architecture.
Among the heritage architecture stand Chinese temples, a Japanese-designed bridge, pagodas, wooden shop-houses, French- colonial houses and old canals. Though many years have passed by, Hoi An has been successful in preserving and restoring its charming roots and was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in December 1999.
Hoi An Riverside is the best place to be at night as the area is lit by quaint and old-fashioned lanterns, making it an atmospheric and beautiful spot. For those who love sea, sun and sand, Cham island, My Khe beach is the best choice.

Hoi An Old Quater
It is situated in Minh An Ward with the surface around 2 km2 with many small short and narrow roads those look like a chess board. Most of the main attraction sites are inside this area such as the Japanese Bridge; the old houses are Phung Hung, Duc An , Diep Dong Nguyen..; assembly halls of Trieu Chau, Phuc Kien ( Chinese people) …
No vehicle noise in this area. Successfully started on 24 July 2004, this program is being continued on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday weekly.
On these days, everyone, especially tourists could enjoy walking on the quiet streets or visit the Hoian ancient town without any trouble caused by vehicle noise from motorbikes. Instead, the smooth music from the ancient tile roofs of the town would make you relaxed and your trip more enjoyable.
Hoi An Lanterns
Lantern is one of a special feature of Hoi An. On the middle of every Lunar month, people in Hoi An will turn off all the electric lights in this ancient town and replaces by thousands of colorful lanterns. The color lights from lanterns are sparkling from the main streets to the small alleys.
Under the skill of Hoi An Artists, the lanterns have various shapes. In festivals, lanterns are the most beautiful decoration.
Tourist can try to make a lantern themselves at some lantern workshops in Pho Co Hoi An or at a village.
At the full moon day, at night, Hoi An looks like a great stage, fanciful and brilliant with colorful lanterns. Hoi An people wearing ancient clothes become actors in reciting poems, playing mah-jong and chess together. These activities relive the beautiful atmosphere of an ancient port with rural pleasures in traditional festivals.
From 6.00 PM till midnight, the whole ancient town are quite, and no vehicles. Both travelers and regional people, Vietnamese and foreigners go for a walk together in the cozy atmosphere with unforgettable memories.
Old Houses Hoi An
Many of the old merchant houses are lived in by the locals, but fortunately they are beautifully preserved. They can be typically described as having a narrow and lofty interior with a barrel vault ceiling. The street entrance has a shop front where the merchant used to display his goods. This is still used for his purpose n modern Hoi An with its numerous galleries and antique shops.

Phung Hung old house was built more than 100 years ago and possessed a unique architecture. It has a high wooden ceiling and large corridors. Phung Hung house have not carved at all by the owner on purpose. On the 29th of June 1993, the house was listed as a national historical vestige.
Many local and international searchers and travelers think about Diep Dong Nguyen old house as a treasure because there are many antique things are displayed in that house. It opens for everyone without security guard but nothing have been lost.
Japanese Covered Bridge
Conecting Tran Phu St. with Nguyen Thi Minh Khai St., Japanese Covered bridge was constructed in the middle of the 16th century by Japanese merchants in Hoi An. Due to natural disaster, Japanese Covered bridge was restored so many times that it gradually lost its original Japanese architecture style and was impacted by Vietnamese and Chinese design. The bridge was provided with a roof which was arched shape and skillfully carved with many fine patterns. Over the door, 3 Chinese characters “ Lai Van Kieu” (it means Bridge for Passers-by From Afar) were carved prominently to name the bridge by Nguyen Phuc Chu Lord in his trip to Hoi An in 1719. The two entrances to the bridge are guarded by a pair of monkeys on one side and a pair of dogs on the other. According to legend, these once lived an enormous monster called Cu whose head was in India, its tail in Japan and its body in Vietnam. Whenever the monster moved, terrible disaster such as floods and earthquake befell these places. Thus, aprat from the purpose of transportation, building the bridge aslo is to speak-killing the monster to preserve safe and peaceful life. Japanese Covered Bridge is an invaluable property and has been officially selected to be the symbol of Hoi An.
Phuc Kien Community Hall – Hoi An Vietnam tourist attractions
This is a Chinese Community Hall, but has other uses as a temple, shrine, place of ancestor worship, and a venue for conferences. The Chinese maintain practicality in their worship but since most things in life can’t be guaranteed, superstition also plays a large part in their religious beliefs. The rear contains an altar dedicated to the three gods of health, wealth, and longevity.
Phuc Kien Assembly hall was once a small temple where Thien Hau Thanh Mau statue (a goddess who protects merchants sailing in the sea) was worshiped. It was picked up on the beach of Hoi An in 1697. Due to restorations and support of the Fukien people, the Assembly hall became resplendent and spacious taking part in the embellishment of Hoi An’s architecture. Arranging the statues for worshiping means “ human happiness” profoundly express the oriental philosophy. Annually, on the 15th of January lunar year, 16th of February lunar year and 23th of March lunar year many activities are organized, attracting a lot of foreigners as well as domestic tourists. On 17th of February 1990 Fukien was listed a national historical vestige.
Kim Bong Carpenter village – tourist attractions in Hoi An
Kim Bong village belong to Cam Kim commune which situated in another side of Hoi An River. This village is famous by their skill in wooden carve. Its origin is from the North. By the time, their art features are the combination between Cham, Chinese, Japanese. Almost the old architecture in Hoi An were made by their ancestors since the glory day of that commercial Hoi An Port.
Thanh Ha Ceramics village – Hoi An tourist attractions
Its origin is from Thanh Hoa. Thanh Ha village was established in the end of 15th century and developing at the same time with Hoi An port. Their products are made from clay by the ingenious skill of artists and their traditional technique.
Cua Dai Beach
It’s around 5 km from Pho Co Hoi An to Cua Dai Beach. That is the closet beach in Hoi An.
